This printing method has a long history in Japan and is best known for the Edo period ukiyo-e prints. The process uses water-based inks and is executed with a handheld baren instead of a printing press. In this introductory workshop, participants work with partly pre-cut plates and learn the particulars of carving and printing Japanese woodblock prints on Japanese kozo (mulberry) paper (often referred to as “rice paper”).

Suitable for participants with a basic understanding of relief printmaking and an interest in Japanese arts and crafts. You can bring your designs (to be discussed with the tutor); simple designs will be available.

Sybille is an experienced Art Tutor teaching at the WSA since 2010. She has studied Japanese printmaking with Master Carvers and Printers in Australia, Germany and Japan since 2016; her work has been exhibited and is held in collections in Aotearoa, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and Japan.

She is currently working towards her Master of Visual at Auckland University of Technology with a focus on printmaking.
