I was raised in my grandparent’s home, they were both creatives in the traditional Māori art of raranga and whakairo. Their commitment to the arts had a direct influence on my life as an artist.

In 2016 I gained an MFA with First Class Honours and awarded top student at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design.

Today I live in our whānau homestead on Turongo Street. I have a small studio at the back of the house where I paint most days. At the front of our house is a wharenui Teohaoturoa that my grandfather built at the time I was born. I based my master’s degree research on this meeting house, it is also the foundation for my practice as an artist.

As a painter I am interested in representation of Māori within the context of European painting history, investigating both technique and subject matter of early European painters of New Zealand and abroad. I paint the everyday lives of people in my community, paying particular attention to relationships amongst family members, intertribal relationships, politics and environments that show the nuance between culture and 21st century life. Through my genre I acknowledge the history of the colonial gaze upon their indigenous subject matter and in that I commandeer that position of power (as the painter) and I become the narrator of our own lives and stories.

This exhibition is dedicated to my creative colleague and great friend the late Marie Panapa.
