Wineries

The first vines planted in New Zealand were planted north of Hamilton in Rongopai. Research started in the late 1800s to identify which grape varieties are best suited to our soils and climate. Today local vineyards produce a variety of great produce.

Below are details of the wineries located in and around Hamilton.

Mystery Creek Wines

Mystery Creek Wines is a progressive, niche producer. With vineyards in the central North Island (just south of Cambridge) and Marlborough (in the Waihopai Valley) Our Waikato vines are nurtured in Horotiu sandy loam over free-draining river shingle, planted on a gentle north facing slope overlooking the Waikato River. The total planted area is 12ha. Our Marlborough vineyard (approximately 200ha (all Sauvignon Blanc)) is planted alongside the banks of the Waihopai River, in gently sloping river shingle.

Rongopai Wines

In the heart of the Waikato, above beautiful Lake Waikare, lies the small town of Te Kauwhata. Set in the picturesque research station built by Italian viticulturist Romeo Bragato in 1902, lies Rongopai Wines, the birthplace of New Zealand winemaking research and one of the leading producers in NZ of botrytised wine. Numerous medals and awards and a strong line-up make Rongopai a familiar and reliable source of great wines in the local market, and internationally.
